AISI Provides Latest Weekly Update on U.S. Raw Steel Output

The U.S domestic raw steel production recorded a jump of 3.3% during the week ended June 8, 2019, when compared with the corresponding week a year before, according to the latest production statistics published by the American Iron and Steel institute (AISI).
 
The weekly production totaled 1.875 million net tons at a capacity utilization rate of 80.6% in the week ending June 8, 2019. This represents an increase of 3.3% from the previous year. The production had totaled 1.815 million net tons during the week ended June 8, 2018. The capacity utilization rate then was 77.4%, said AISI data.
 
When matched with the prior week production of 1.890 million net tons, the production during the current week was down marginally by 0.8%. Over the week, the capacity utilization rate declined from 81.2% to 80.6%.
 
The cumulative raw steel production by U.S. domestic mills through June 8, 2019 totaled 43.110 million net tons, 6.0% higher from 40.657 million net tons produced during the corresponding period in 2018. The capability utilization rate averaged at 81.5% during year-to-date period this year, as compared with 76.7% in the previous year.
 
According to AISI data, the primary steel producer was the Great Lakes region, which recorded an output of 720,000 net tons, closely followed by Southern region with 684,000 net tons. The output by other regions in thousand of net tons is as follows: North East (214), Midwest (186) and Western (71).
